Tobacco Cessation: A Guide for Clinicians

L. Brandt, G. Fischer

Smoking behavior is a complex phenomenon that entails innumerable variables.

Successful treatment interventions must be based on a comprehensive diagnosis

and must consider the whole spectrum of factors influencing smoking behavior and

nicotine dependence.

We Should Screen Smokers for Bladder and Kidney Cancer

Y. Lotan

This commentary defends the rationale for screening smokers for bladder and

kidney cancer. Some important questions on the use of screening in these

malignancies need to be answered.

52

Smoking Status Is Not Sufficient to Accurately Target Patients Who Would Benefit from Screening for Bladder and Kidney Cancer

M. Rouprêt

Until tests become available, smoking avoidance and smoking cessation are the two

most critical and realistic policies to promote nonsmoking in 2014. Preventing

bladder cancer and renal cell carcinoma is certainly the most important approach

to reduce their incidences and patient mortality.

Impact of Combined Use of Blood-based Inflammatory Markers on Patients with Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma Following Radical Nephroureterectomy: Proposal of a Cumulative Marker Score as a Novel Predictive Tool for Prognosis

N. Tanaka, E. Kikuchi, K. Kanao, K. Matsumoto, S. Shirotake, Y. Miyazaki, H. Kobayashi,

G. Kaneko, M. Hagiwara, H. Ide, J. Obata, K. Hoshino, N. Hayakawa, T. Kosaka, S. Hara,

K. Nakagawa, M. Jinzaki, M. Oya

Preoperative elevation of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, plasma fibrinogen, or

serum C-reactive protein independently predicts outcome in patients with upper

tract urothelial carcinoma who are treated surgically; however, combinations of all

three markers can be more predictive than a single marker or combinations of two.

Minimally Invasive Partial Nephrectomy Versus Laparoscopic Cryoablation for Patients Newly Diagnosed with a Single Small Renal Mass

N. Fossati, A. Larcher, G.M. Gadda, D.D. Sjoberg, F.A. Mistretta, P. Dell’Oglio, G. Lista, C. Carenzi,

G. Lughezzani, M. Lazzeri, F. Montorsi, A.J. Vickers, G. Guazzoni, N.M. Buffi

In this single-centre study we compared minimally invasive partial nephrectomy

(MIPN) and laparoscopic renal cryoablation (LRC) in patients newly diagnosed with a

single small renal mass. We found that MIPN and LRC provided similar cancer

control and comparable renal function at intermediate-term follow-up. Thus, both

surgical techniques are viable treatment options for the management of patients

newly diagnosed with a single small renal mass.
